“Mexican Whiteboy” Seminar Reflection

Reaction
It got my attention when George added to the quote that Sara had said, “Never to had suffer never too had been blessed. The quote had some effect that you have to learn from your mistakes. Thats what I have grown up believing. I completely agree with that. I feel it’s a learning lesson. If I had a kid who had say stole something I would make him go back to whatever he or she stole the item from and give it back.
Connection
I felt this related to me a lot because I used to live in west Sacramento. My step dad called it West Sac. We lived in the middle class of West Sac but before my mom came along my dad lived in poverty. He was a car thief. But know he is a changed man. Even when I was living in San Diego I remember these neighoods.
Self-Evaluation
I think I did very well generally speaking. I think I could have improved in receding more evidence from the book. Instead of agreeing with everyone and just nodding contribute more. But all in all I think I was okay I contributed my part. I think if we did this again it would be different.
Beautiful Line
“It’s bigger than your dumb ass. It’s about your right arm. Your talent.” This line I find beautiful because to me it feels like you are the only one that can change your future/destiny. As it shows throughout the book Danny changes from being a wild pitcher to a allstar.

How do Danny and Uno Identify?
Uno’s mask in the beginning was the streetsmart tough guy and Danny’s mask was the nobody, he didn’t have a identity. Uno was a bully to Danny because he didn’t and the streetsmart came into play by the swindling the other kids out of there money. He wanted to make money without actually working. Danny was a nobody because he didn’t identify with his white or mexican side. Uno had an alcoholic/druggie father that was a dick. Danny’s father was never there. Danny was lied to about his dad. He was told his father was in mexico. His mother didn’t really care she was set on a boyfriend.
Defining Mexican Whiteboy
Danny and Uno come from different economic classes and races. Even though they are both mexican it is still very different. Danny coming from San Francisco living around white people like his mother and his mother’s boyfriend. When moving back down to San Diego, moved to a poorer economic class. Uno being half black and half mexican was stereotyped to be in a poorer society because of his skin color. Uno’s father realized that he could be in a better place so he moved out of that neighborhood.
What did I learn?
I learned what it means to be a family. No matter your race. No matter your economic class. A family is a family, the only thing that matters is how they act. In the book they have their group of friends and their like a little family. In my family there's four different ethnicities in my family and we still love each other.
