I was surprised by how much work there was for me to do at my internship. One of my biggest fears going into this was if there was enough for me to do, but there was a lot. I did everything from mopping to typing emails. They have kept me busy here. Speaking of busy work I have made a lot of progress on my project in the time that I have been here. I have the layout of my projects visual piece set up and I am always tweaking it though so it's hard to say it is done. But I am beginning to plan out how I am going to make a physical model of the lab. My biggest goals for this internship was to really learn what makes a chemistry lab good. What makes a chemistry lab efficient and a strong learning environment. While out here I got a tour of all the chemistry labs that Gateway Technical College offers. I learned a lot about requirements for a classroom, mostly due to keep the lab safe. I found this most important to me in my project because my lab has to be safe fr students to use. I have really learned how to manage time well. During school I had developed this project for work time, where I allow my self to goof off a bit at a time but to also work diligently. I think what I can pull from this is experience and then use in my everyday life is the ability to take orders. Now when I say that I know it sounds weird, what I mean is that I can deliver to my superiors what is asked of me and then some.

Well this is the conclusion of week two. All I did was work, I had a lot of time in labs this week. Everyday this week I have been getting up a 6:30 and not returning home until 5:00 or 6:00 that evening and I love it. I finally get understand what it is like to have a full time job. I also I understand how to manage money better because I only came out here with a certain amount of money and I have had to learn how to spend money on needs not wants.
In my second week I have somewhat made progress on my project. The only reason that I didn't make as much progress as I had hoped was because I scratched my entire first design. I started over because I realized my whole classroom would be more efficient, as in the flow of the classroom would work better if I moved a few rooms. That has been a challenge but at the same time fun because it is something new to think about! This is my entry after my first week of my internship. I am staying with my grandparents that live out this way and I am working under a lab technician who is also my uncle. So I got to a pretty relaxed job. I arrived Tuesday but didn't start working till Thursday. I don't have a set schedule of when I am working because my uncle doesn't have one either. But none the less I am usually working 4-5 days a week. But the days I did work, were pretty slow I got to run an experiment with my uncle and I forgot what it was but it was a slow process with a lot of waiting so we watched a lot of youtube videos. But most of the day, it was my uncle and I sitting at my laptop starting my design for um project(which for those of you that don't know is a theoretical chemistry lab for Animas new building, whenever that gets built). In my free time at my grandparents place I have been working on a base design and we talked about it. We discussed how to make the room safer and up to fire code.
I feel like in the first week I learned something very valuable to me at work and at school. A way to stay focused on my work. And it's quite simple actually how it works. I am using it right now. What I do is look up a 30-60 minute video of study music. I work until this video ends and then I can goof off for a bit. I am usually messing around for 15 minutes or so then I start again. You have no idea how beneficial this is to me! I have faced a lot of challenge in my design. I am using a drag and drop program to build my chemistry lab that looks really good, but it was design for homes and offices so it doesn't let me do everything I want to with it but I still find ways around these problems. This has helped me improve my problem solving skill. I made on mistake that wasn't bad but it was definitely annoying. But it helped me to plan better for my future. If you remember earlier I told you that I made my lab before seeing my uncle, well when I saw him and looked at him with it. He told me that my design would violate many fire codes and doesn't work as efficiently as it could. It was a minor mess up but good to learn from none the less. |
