Socialization Project
Why are we like this?
by: Thane McGrath
Are you an Agent or a Target? An Agent is one who is opposed to people who are mean and cruel, as opposed to a Target who is prey to the cruel. We all Identify as Agents and Targets. Albeit through different means and in many combinations such as: race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, social class, age, and ability. Since I was nine, I have been socialized to support all people including those of other sexual orientations, racial backgrounds and basically what it means to be an accepting person.
For the past four years, I've been supporting gay rights actively though my church and our youth group. I have been a member of the UUFD( Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango). My church’s first principle is, “We believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every being.” My youth group, that starts with ages from 6th grade and up, goes to the Fort Lewis College’s PRISM group, this is the Fort’s gay, bi, and transgender group. We participate in their meetings and do things we can to bring awareness and acceptance. I am also a member of PEAT (Prejudice Elimination Action Team). Action is the operative word because I participated in PEAT’s float in the Homecoming Parade for Durango High School. Sexual orientations other than heterosexual socialized me by showing me how assorted groups respond to different sexual orientations, whether that be for good or bad. A homosexual person can be a target and a can also be an agent for good. As can a heterosexual person.
Racial and ethnic equality is important to me because I come from a very diverse family. I am Irish and Jewish, I have a black uncle and my step family is Native American and Mexican. My family dinner table is where most of our cultures combine. We have blended customs and practices such as manners and food. We learn from each other by talking about how our day went. We combine food and how we make it and what we make. From my family I've learned why manners exist across our cultures. I’ve learned how some are similar and some are different. In Los Angeles my dad used to coach a basketball team that was mostly black players; since I was an infant I commingled with blacks that love to play basketball. After going on trips with my dad’s team I don’t see the black players as African Americans, just my friends. The facts of race have socialized me to understand a person as a person not by the how they look or the color of their skin but of how they present themselves. Any person, black or white, can be a target of racism,or an agent against racism.
Ever since I was born, my mom has been cracking the whip on being a positive person. I have been trained to set out for the diverse world ahead. It’s like I’ve been given a light and I have to travel through a tunnel of darkness. The light is my good side, the tunnel is life and the darkness is my bad side. In life it’s harder to be a nice person than a bad person. I believe this because of the negative conditions I have been exposed to on a daily basis in the media. However, I have been socialized to be positive to all by accepting people for who they are and being humane to all. From my point of view, which is Caucasian, its stereotyped by some people that blacks are inferior. I’m here to tell you that’s wrong and it’s also wrong with gays, some say they are influenced by the devil, well no, that’s false.

Anything to Survive
Prologue
(HIgh school dropouts who don’t care about a future and will do anything for a buck, Jordan’s apartment, Jordan is sad)
Jordan: Fredrick, Johnny is dead. His past finally caught up with him, I don’t know how i’m going to continue in life. He supported the family. The jobs with his friends.
Fredrick: You mean the robberys?
Jordan: Yes, I think they are going to come for me.
Fredrick: What do you mean?
Jordan: His friends, they are going to want me for the jobs.
Fredrick: Why do you not want to?
Jordan: Is that all you care about!? Getting money from Johnny so you can sit back and relax.
Fredrick: No No No, thats not what I meant.
Jordan: Then what did you mean, please explain!?
Fredrick: Well you and I are down in the red. Alex is not eating a lot and your eating even less.
Jordan: Oh! Thank you for reminding me. I’m sorry I am just scared. I mean Johnny was paying the bills. The money I make was just for me. $7.50 barely does anything.
Fredrick: Where do you work again?
Jordan: McDonalds. I hate it. I make fries for a living.
Fredrick: Do the jobs Jordan. Do it for Johnny, do it for little Alex.
Jordan: Okay lets say I do then who will take of Alex?
Fredrick: I will.
Chorus:
How far is she,
from the street,
is she a lowlife,
no one cares about her,
she is on the edge,
of being homeless,
food is scarce,
money is scarcer,
love is gone,
hope is hanging,
by a thread.
Scene 1
(Jordan is sitting on the ground playing with her child Alex, when there is at knock at the door, Jordan opens the door to find Johnny’s friends/accomplices at the door.)
Jordan: I knew you guys were coming. But what I don’t know is what you want from me. I’m not a thief.
Max: We know you're not. This is our last robbery, then we want to leave the state then live real lives.
Tommy: Real lives!!
Jordan: I’m guessing I have no way out of this.
Max: No, you really don’t.
Tommy: you don’t
Max: Tommy, shut up.
Tommy: Sorry. (under breath) idiot
(Max hits tommy over the head)
Danny: Both of you quit it. I swear I’m a babysitter. Look we need a fourth man, Max is on driving, Tommy is watching the door, and I am going with you in the store.
Jordan: Okay what do we have to use. Code names, masks, weapons?
Danny:(Point at Max) Max?
Max: Masks is just whatever we find. Guns are easy I got a contact. Code names are military alphabet. But your name goes with the first letter of your name.
Danny: I am Delta, Max is Mike, Tommy is Tango, and Jordan your name is Juliet.
Jordan: Okay, what's the plan.
Max: You get in and get out not much to it. I will be parked around the corner.
Jordan: Okay seems pretty good to me is there any side notes I need to know about.
Tommy: I know a guy he is giving us a three minute window so when Max says get in and out he means get out and fast.
Jordan: Okay lets go.
Chorus :
Why is she doing this,
she could die then what will happen to Alex,
they are young and foolish,
they may have been lucky on their first job,
but this time is risky,
she was convinced to easy,
but lets be honest she is poor,
she needs the money to survive,
but not like this she can find a way.
Scene 2
(Tango, Delta and Juliette are outside the store about to start the job)
Delta: You ready?
Juliette: Yea lets go.
Tango: Hey remeber (points to watch) time
Delta: Got it, GO GO GO. GIVE US THE MONEY!!!
(Store owner pulls out gun and shoots at Delta and Juliette. Delta shoots the store owner.)
Delta: Juliette go get the money I will cover with Tango.
Juliette: Got it.
(Juliette grabs cash and runs out to Delta.)
Tango: It was a set up cops are everywhere.
Delta: Three minute window really?
Juliette: Where is the pick up?
Tango: I don’t know, wait there.
(Point to driveway, Mike gets shot)
Tango: NO!! We got to save Mike.
Delta: He’s gone… Tommy he’s gone.
Tango: Nooooooooooooo!! Ahhhhhh(Tommy goes crazy shooting and gets hit)
Delta: Get back in the store!
(Juliette and Delta enter the store. Delta shoots Juliette in the stomach)
Juliette: Why, I’ve known you since we were kids?
Delta: Well you know why, money, You see in this great economy, the minimum wage is $7.50 an hour. You see Uncle Scrooge gets all the money because he has power. He say that he is making products cheaper but our essentials like food, health, a roof over our heads. That price hasn’t changed at all. You're in the same spot i’m in right now.
Juliette: But why me?
Delta: Johnny, thats way blame him. he wanted to quit. I said yes he said no, yes, no, yes. It was a fight for the gun. I won. THats all there is to it.
Chorus:
We said it was going to end bad,
but she did it anyway,
the risk were very high,
but she knew the risks,
why risk Alex,
speaking of Alex,
what's going to happen to Alex,
who knows,
well the streets of L.A.
care for no one.

Tragedy Project Reflection
Tragedy Project Reflection
By: Thane McGrath
1. What are you most proud of about your project? Why do you think you are proud of it?
I’m most proud of my storyline. The time and effort I put into my script to make it realistic and cathartic. I think I did a good job making it cathartic because she was already poor and then when she did something to change her circumstances, she ended up still losing, in other words dying. I tried to put a lot of emotion into the story and make it realistic. In the tragedy, I wanted to portray her struggle and situation as real (even if her situation is not something that everyone has experienced), in a way that the audience could relate, hence, the need to take care of a child.
2. What advice would give a student next year about how to be successful with this project?
I would recommend lots and lots and lots of revising. I would guide them to fix errors and change the story here and there, play around, don’t be afraid of starting over if they need to. If you're doing a video, get props ready and be ready to work when it’s your time with the camera. You’re going to be shooting a lot because you will be redoing your scenes a lot or you should be. Do your research, it is very important!!
4. What proved to be the most challenging task for you personally and how did you work to overcome it?
The whole project was challenging. The first thing that made it challenging was doing it alone, because my partner quit when the project started. So, it was difficult to set everything up: get people for the video, get props, and camera privileges. I think there should more time to work on the project. There should be more time to use the camera. To overcome this, I worked diligently, I pushed to make time and create my video.

Mexico’s position on Israel vs Palestine issue
Although Mexico believes in the Israeli right to have a land of their own, particularly in the “holy land” of the Torah, Mexico believes that they should give back to the Palestinians and share the land equally.
Israel and Palestine have fought each other for over 10 years, and it seems their is no satisfactory solution, both have legitimate claims. The Palestinians did not own the land, however they have lived there for ages, even though no official country was made. Yet, the entire area was referred to as Palestine for many years before any Israeli claim. The British ended up officially owning this area of the middle east and when the Israelis wanted it the British gave it to them through the 1947 UN Partition Plan, even though the original idea of this plan was to make two countries. The Israelis kicked out the Palestinians and forced them into other countries, according to the Palestinians. The state of Israel maintains that the Palestinians left of their own free will. The Palestinians started a war over the land, but the Israelis won this war and took the land. Although, Israel and Palestine have offered different solutions, neither party has been able to come to an agreement.(Shoebat, Video/The History of
McGrath 2
the Middle East Conflict in Eleven Minutes)
Mexico believes that we can come to a thoughtful and peaceful solution. Mexico does want Palestine to become it’s own sovereign nation, but does not know what they want to do with Israel. So, at this point, Mexico stands behind the equal split of the land. We could place sanctions on countries by saying it’s illegal to enter each other’s countries. We might even let them guard their borders with firearms. Then again it might not be a good idea to let the Palestinians have firearms. We are not saying we don’t like or trust them, we are saying we believe they are unstable. Because if you look at the history, the Palestinians started the war. Now Mexico feels
that there is no need for military involvement, and if anything, the British should be
responsible for any actions involving the military, as their 1947 UN Partition Plan started Palestinian aggression towards the Jews.

Reflection
Model UN Reflection
By: Thane McGrath
1. What would you tell another student if they asked why the MUN(Model United Nations) project was important?
This project is very important to a growing learner because it teaches us how we deal with problems in the world. For example if you look at our last Model UN, we discussed how we want to fix the Israel, Palestinian conflict. We actually had a real United Nation session and we made a real plan for the problem. It’s actually called a resolution but to someone who doesn’t know what that is, it is a plan or solution for the problem/conflict. We also had a real member from the United Nations and he was in the congo when the UN sent in troops to protect and try to straighten out the congo or the official name, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Model UN project is perfect for a new learner.
2. Think of this project overall- Which habit of heart and mind were you most proud of using during the conference?
I think perseverance was a real needed skill for this project. Because this was a project where you needed to go home and work because you could not just finish it during class. I feel perseverance connects that because a lot of kids even me when we get home we want to rest, watch T.V. but we need to push ourselves and do our work or in other words persevere. There have been times where I have been to lazy do my work or even turn it in. I feel that the best way to persevere in class and in life is to be honest with the people around you and most with your self.
3. What was the greatest challenge you faced in the project and how did you work through it?
I think the hardest challenge I faced was my not being able to push myself to strive to be great. I had a hard time researching, with Dyslexia it was hard to read some of the thick and long readings. It was a challenge to even find information on Mexico because they don’t have a big take on the issue. But in the end I found information but of course it was long text and little words. Dyslexia was my biggest challenge.
4. What was the most interesting speech, resolution, amendment, or comment by one of the delegates?
I thought a great speech was France(Alexis), her plan was strong and thought out. She had taken time and had lots of information and a well thought out plan, like I said before. She stated a very good and most indefinetly a possible and realistic idea. She supported the two state solution which I also agreed with or I should say Mexico did. France had all the stops, safe routes, peacekeepers, democracy. She had it all planed out and was prepared every step of the way.

Paragraph summary:
Obama is in full support of Israel's borders and believes in them having their own country. Yet, Another thing to consider is where do American’s sympathies lie? Because Obama’s support does not entirely hold up with the people of America. 57% of Americans agree with Obama and 25% don’t. Polls also tell us that 59% of American sympathy lies with Israel, but 13% believe in Palestine, regardless of Obama. Mostly it appears that the American people back Israel as a country.
2-3 sentences: I learned that my country wants to side with their biggest and strongest ally. Mexico backs the U.S. in believing that Israel has the right to defend itself. I learned that Mexico didn’t really have a big say in this because they are not on the Security Council, but in the end, they will back the country with the most power and money.
Quotes:
1”There are some who argue that President Obama and the American government are either too supportive or not supportive enough of Israel, but the polling says Obama is striking the right balance.”
2 “A new poll from CNN/ORC demonstrates that the president represents the majority position in the US: 57% of Americans believe that Israel is justified in "taking military action against Hamas and the Palestinians in the area known as Gaza", while only 25% feel it is unjustified.”

Paragraph Summary:
This source is obviously talking about Mexico’s view on the Israel/Palestinian issue. In this article by The Foreign Policy Journal, they speak of Mexico backing a sovereign Palestinian country. However, Mexico does not want to dissolve Israel, so they agree with the UN 1947 to divide the countries equally, to share the land (the holy land).
2-3 Sentences: Mexico believes that Palestine should have it’s own country, but then again they want to agree with their biggest and strongest ally and that’s the USA, who believes that Israel should be granted sovereignity. Mexico agrees with the UN 1947 plan of two equal countries.
Quotes: 1 - Finally, on November the 29th 2012, Mexico was among the 139 States which voted in favor of raising the status of Palestine to that of a non-member observer state of the UN (nine States voted against, among them the US, Canada and Israel).
2 - Members of the Sub-Ministry of FA insisted in reminding this author that Mexico has always backed the establishment of a sovereign Palestinian State and they offer as proof of Mexico’s prestige the invitation it received to attend the Peace Conference in Annapolis in 2007.

Paragraph Summary:
This very small article tells us who voted and/or agreed to let Palestine be recognized as a country. This information was released after Chile came out and said they were supporting the country of Palestine. But nothing was said of Israel or if they agreed with the 1947 UN Partition Plan to split the land equally.
2-3 sentences: Mexico recently voted to recognize Palestine and invite them into the UN. They sided with the main group of South America including Chile, Brazil, Argentina, ect.
Quotes:
1 - Mexico and the Republic of Suriname are expected within the coming weeks to recognize a Palestinian state, announced Riyad al-Maliki in his interview with the Arabic news daily Asharq al-Awsat.

Paragraph Summary: Mexico’s Secretary General of the Party of the Democratic Revolution believes in allowing a free and sovereign Palestinian state, regardless of United States and/or Israeli leanings; however, they would be inclined to agree with a UN Partition Plan.
2-3 Sentences: I learned that my country, Mexico, is trying to be passive. Their main goal is achieving peace and trying to stop this conflict with not going to war.

Paragraph Summary:
Israel may be facing harsh ramifications after Ecuador joined the other Latin American countries in recognizing Palestine as a sovereign nation. There was a statement by a Labor member saying he wouldn’t be surprised if the United States would support Palestine in this year. There is also talk of Israel keeping the land and if they want it time is running out, because lots of countries are starting to support Palestinian.
2-3 Sentences: I learned that Mexico is joining the vote of the south americas because a lot of their votes are going towards Palestine and the decision is leaning more towards a Palestinian taking over of the land. But, I believe that Mexico will decide to agree with the equal split of both countries.
Quotes: 1 "I wouldn't be surprised if the US will also recognize a Palestinian state in the coming year, and then we will have to provide explanations as to how it happened," the Labor member told Sunday's weekly cabinet meeting.

Resolution
United Mexican States(Thane McGrath)
Israel vs Palestine Conflict
SPLITTING THE LAND HELD BY ISRAEL INTO TWO FOR PALESTINIANS TO LIVE
The General Assembly,
Aware that Mexico and The United Nations have had to face many hard decisions involving the Israel/Palestinian conflict,
Deeply concerned about the innocent people trapped in the middle of this conflict, such as Palestinians forced from their homes and Isreali’s denied theirs,
Emphasizing the safety of all people in the Middle East, including the Israelis and the Palestinians, with regard to safety within the disputed land borders and refugees living abroad and in refugee camps,
Realizing the Palestinians have laid claim to the disputed lands for hundreds of years and more recently Resolution 194 passed in 1948 (the right of return), and that the Israeli People have legitimate claims through historical sources such as the Torah,
Concerned that viable solutions have been offered and neither party, Palestinian or Israeli are willing to bend,
Expecting harsh sanctions and possibly force having to be used in order to bring compromise to this situation,
1. Taking note of the many attempts to stop this conflict Mexico feels there are a couple solutions we have not tried or are good solutions but just need to be embraced more;
2. Strongly supports the solution to split the country in two and have to separate countries on the land;
3. Welcomes any and all solutions the resolve the problem in a peaceful and non-militarized manner, but strongly urges the solution of splitting the country;
4. Encourages non-violent solutions that fix or stop the conflict to come out in a peaceful manner but that includes Palestine be given some land and especially more than they have now;
5. Further remindes the UN Mexico wants to make sure we do not hurt the innocent people of both countries;
6. Recommends that both countries put down their weapons and try to come to a peaceful solution and understanding;
7. Approves of actions of stop this conflict that do not involve military or violent actions.

Mexico's Speech on Israel vs Palestinian Conflict
(Thane McGrath) Please direct your attention to 1c:
Mexico believes in the two state solution. This is why Mexico stands behind France’s 1967 plan for dividing Palestine into two equal states. Please, direct your attention to 1C. We, Mexico, understand that Israel forcefully took Palestinian lands and properties, and ultimately won the war; however, we believe it will work for everyone if they divide the country into two states, with a goal of harmonious co-existing. We would like there to be safe passage from both sides, so that all people can travel to and from the holy land peacefully. We are in full agreement with France’s third preambular phrase, it states, “There should be no oppression to any of the people from either side”. Regarding France’s sixth operative phrase we understand and agree with their thinking. They state that they want peaceful meetings between the two countries, but we feel that this will not be easily done, as meetings in the past have failed to come to viable solutions. For example, in the video “History of the Middle East Conflict in 11 Minutes” the narrator speaks of when the two countries were ready to kill each other in the streets. At one point the Palestinians were shouting that they would “ . . . Spill blood in the streets.” And, Israel believes that if the Palestinians are allowed to return that would be the elimination of the state of Israel. They further state, “If the Palestinians insist on it [Right of Return], there will be no agreement.” Regardless, Mexico believes that a solution must be sought and must be implemented soon. Both parties, Israel and Palestine, have to come to an agreement.
The Happiness Project
The Idea of Happiness By:Thane McGrath
The U.S.’s rank in happiness is based on the people, the rich are usually happier people but there are people in the lower classes tha are happy but most are the rich, so I would say the 20th. Finding happiness shouldn’t just be a life goal but be your driving force when strive for other goals. There are different types of ways to achieve happiness, we need to be in an environment we enjoy and brings us happiness, understanding the three different types of happiness, being around other people who are happy, and working towards goals.
Being in a enviroment you enjoy can bring out the happiness in you. Roy Blanchard lives in Louisiana, he loves taking his boat thru the bog and take in the wild life. I learned about this man and where he finds his happiness by watching the Happy Documentary. In short Roy finds his happiness out in nature. There was another women that suffered a terrible accident where her face was seriously injured. I also found this while watching the happy movie but what makes her happy is watching the ocean waves come in on the beach.
According to Gretchen Rubin’s happiness pie chart, happiness is 50% genetic, 40% intentional circumstances and 10% unexpected happiness. Genetics refers to the genes you get from your father
and mother, who your parents were. This was found in the movie happy, it had a pie chart that Gretchen made. Even though you can make yourself happy, you still can be more happy or sad depending on
your genes. Intentional activities take up 40% of all happiness you have. Intentional happiness is making yourself happy, doing activities that bring you joy. Even if you choose to make yourself happy there is still 60% of uncontrollable happiness.
Some say that being around other people that are happy can make you happy. In the Happy movie they talk about Denmark where they live in houses where more than one family lives. They all have their own spaces, they are like an apartment complex. You might think that it would be hell to live in a house with other families but all the families contribute to the community to maintain the home. My mother and I’s birthdays are three days away from each other, so we usually share a birthday party. It makes me
happy to see other people happy at the party especially my mom. I believe that being around others who are happy can make you happy.
In this world people can look at things as difficult or miserable, or they can relax and enjoy what they are doing no matter how difficult. I go to work and I can be miserable but when my shift ends I feel happy and accomplished. It also makes me feel great when I pick up my paycheck. I gain happiness when I complete a goal like cleaning my room. It feels good to flop down on my freshly made bed and look out on my clean room. Finishing goals, short term or lifetime goals can bring happiness.
If I were to tell a friend how to find happiness I would say that whatever activity you do that makes you happy, just keep doing it. I think it’s critical examine happiness because life should be driven by happiness, you shouldn't get up in the morning to go to school or work, you should get up to go out and catch happiness. In this essay I discussed environmental happiness, the three different types of happiness, being with others who are happy and complete life goals.

Happiness Project Reflection
If I were to tell someone how to find happiness I would start with something like “What do you enjoy doing most, what activity”. Finding happiness is simply finding what makes you happy. If you enjoy playing basketball, start playing for a team and maybe you'll grow up get a scholarship and then play professionally. What im trying to say is that don’t be stuck doing miserable jobs and find a job that you find interesting and fun. If you have a fun job you won’t work a day in your life.
My plan for summer is actually very packed. I will be out of town the most of the time. I will be going to Providence Rhode Island to see my mother's dad for the first time, this is a life changing moment for me because something that has been only been talked about is finally happening . I will also be visiting my dad in L.A. for a little while and that means alot to me because I don’t always get to see him. This experience has changed my outlook on the world.
Like I said above it has change my outlook on life. It has made me to appreciate smaller things that I just took for granted. Like a smile, a single smile can mean the world to someone. What I learned has changed me to also have a better understanding of life. It changes my everyday actions to something more meaningful.
